Amateur Photography vs Commercial Photography in Business

Businesses all around the world live off of the consumer. Consumers of the world live off of the product these businesses. To reach consumers, businesses are looking for ways to expose themselves to the consumers as having the "better product" to compete with their competitors. One way they do this is by hiring a professional commercial photographer to suggest they have the superior product.

How can a photographer make a product better just by simply taking a picture of it? Direct your attention to these photos of similar products, one taken by an amateur photographer, and another by a commercial photographer.

Which product seems more appealing? Which product would you buy based on these images?

The image located on the left is an example of amateur photography. It is obvious the photographer did not put much thought into the image, it being dark, the candid environment, and an overall feeling of lack of effort.

The image located on the right presents a full shot of the product, fully illuminated, wire tucked away neatly, and no obstructions in the background.

It is obvious if these two products were vertically aligned in an Amazon catalog, the impression of the image on the left would be connected to "used" and the image on the right as "new". This aspect highlights the power of a professional commercial photographer compared to an amateur, as consumers are more drawn towards buying the product on the right.

Photographers posse the power to characterize subjects and products in their images. In the business industry it is vital to surpass competitors and to promote the "better product". Ensuring your photographer is skilled and qualified determines the quality of your product to consumers, the perception of quality in the mind of consumers determines the consumption of your product, the consumption of your product determines the success of your business.
